Destination Dumpster: Throwing Out Trash and Finding Treasures, Part 2

Summer 2023 update! We spent the first two weeks of July back in Nebraska visiting family and working on our new old house. Over the days we carried out over 6 trailer loads of junk! With the help of my mom, grandma Jeanne, Cindy, and my blessed husband, we carefully went through every last thing in that house. Max might have called us crazy once or two times for not just throwing it all out, but goodness, there were some really cool finds in there!

After several days of work, we finally got everything either hauled to the dump (thank you father-in-law JJ and brother-in-law Joe) or placed in the front two rooms for the next phase of sorting. We had an antiquer already come take a few items off our hands, but there's still lots of cool items and tons of vintage clothes! Now we’ve just got to figure out what to do with it!

I set aside a few cool finds for myself: an old large airport light previously being used as an end table, 2 wood plank and cardboard folk art pictures, a couple antique wooden chairs, wooden book shelf, some cool old books, a quilted rooster door weight, vintage kitchenware, a beautiful farm table, a huge conch shell I gave to mom, a pineapple planter for my sister, a large fish bowl mom helped me make a terrarium out of, and a host of interesting trinkets found here and there.

Terry and Cindy helped get all the kitchen appliances out to the curb and poor Max and my brother Eli had the honors of emptying the fridge and deep freezer contents. They reported that it was in fact as bad as you would think!

Max spent the last several days starting to demo. We are being very strategic with process so as to preserve the integrity of the wood trim, floors, and features. So far he has removed the drop ceilings and wall panels in the living room and dining room, gutted the bathroom, and removed the plaster and lathe from the ceilings of the living room, dining room, laundry room, and large upstairs room. Good start to demolition I would say! Next steps are to finish getting everything out of the house, continue demo-ing the ceilings, and to clear the floors of debris so we can remove and label the wood finishings and finish stripping the walls to the studs.

Also, we are expecting to get our new roof any day now! We decided to go with Rustic Redwood from Tamko Titan XT Heritage. We've heard wonderful things about this shingle and the roofers we have contracted. They will fix 'er up really nice and put new white gutters on too. I can't hardly wait to see what a fresh roof does to our old beauty.

Sometimes I still can't believe we are really doing this. Every step we take, the whole thing feels more and more real, it brings us closer and closer to this huge life change and requires Max and I to lean in and grow deeper and deeper in our faith. There are many many emotions... bittersweet, happy, sad, uncertain, expectant, nervous, and so so excited. We know God gave us this vision. We trust He has got us.
